Many of the creative souls struggle to balance the Day Job and Night creativity in the initial journey. It’s difficult to juggle extreme environments to keep your motivation and inspiration burning for making beautiful artwork. We have seen many people who succumb to the pressure of earning bread and butter through their day job and turn their backs on creativity!
But, we would like to share an inspirational journey of our artist Mr. Suresh Joshi, from Melbourne Australia, who actually developed new painting techniques using the raw materials he found in his Printing Press day job at Metal Box.
Mr. Joshi started his career as apprentice in Printing Press Company which printed artwork on Metal Boxes used for storing Food Products. He worked in this same company for 38 years, during which he immigrated to Melbourne, Australia some 25 years ago.
Mr. Joshi nurtured his art during all the phases of his Day Job; even arriving in new country did not stop him practicing his art.
Some background about Metal Oil Painting techniques
Mr. Joshi used the thick gauge aluminium and tin metal sheets for creating his artworks. This process was developed by using metal scraps from his office workshops during his lunch breaks or after hours.
Step-by step process
- Thick Metal sheet is prepared for painting by applying thick White Base coat. This needs to be air dried
- Thick oil paints are smeared on the white base using palette knife. The colours are mixed, spread or splashed to create interesting textures and colours.
- The work is fairly thick and takes some time to achieve some shape or form while creating landscapes.
- The final painting needs to be sun dried or baked in oven at 45 -50 Degree Celsius. This limits his painting time to summer days in Australia, since he doesn’t have access to industrial ovens in his retirement time
- The final painting is then coated with clear varnish to be cherished for years to come
- Joshi even creates his own wooden frame for his painting, and paints the frame in matching colours.
- His frames are made of thick plywood, to create depth and 3D effect for his artwork.
He is now showcasing some of his best creations in Online Gallery as he wants his work to reach maximum audiences worldwide. He experimented in Colour Concept, where he created range of artworks to explain the effect of colours of viewers’ moods and feelings.
